The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.
Competitors are granted the right to challenge specific rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This development arrives only a year after the AELTC implemented ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, granting the rally to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
