The Leading Release of the Year: Rosalía's Masterpiece Claims the Top Spot.

On the surface, this work may look closer to an arduous university quiz than the latest popular music project by a musician whose last hit featured a global K-pop star. Divided into four distinct sections and sung in thirteen tongues, we have a head-spinning classical-tinged work investigating feminine mystery, religious ascent, and physical transformation, frequently by way of the perspective of different women saints. The dissolution of a love affair—a topic handled with grounded openness elsewhere—is launched upwards on this record, buoyed by the constant sound of a major symphony orchestra and input from a Pulitzer-winning composer within a long list of collaborators. The pure ambition alone makes the efforts of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Transcending Academic Exercise

That Lux succeeds in transcend overly intellectual chin-stroking feels nearly miraculous, with full praise going to Rosalía. While this is not her first project to alchemize historical sounds and the present, its ambitions are much higher here, with the balancing act far more dramatic. The element that truly elevates this fourth release, outside of its complex tunes, rich compositions, and engrained theatricality, is an essential sense of playfulness. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a wondrous sense to the vocalist's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. Even when she is tearing hearts apart, you nevertheless desire to be right there through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly during a stirring Italian song about a saint. It luxuriates in a string-drenched melancholy over more than four moments. Then, everything drops away, to reveal there's a spontaneous giggle and a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated orchestral surge thuds down like comedic impact. The song immediately shifts into the frenetic single featuring racing orchestration, an imposing choral group, and a surprise role from the artist Björk.

"The charm of this album lies in you never quite understand—or even wish to predict—what it will go to next."

Nearly each song ends in a completely distinct point than how it started. One moment explores the fleeting nature of celebrity over a featherlight orchestration before disintegrating into digital chaos. Elsewhere, a cut that recalls her previous trap-infused work begins out dark and brooding, with prowling vocals, before fluttering traditional rhythms and a heavenly choir enter to smooth its jagged corners.

The Balance Of Art & Accessibility

A key achievement of the album is navigating the gap of bold innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little surprise that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a suite of truly undeniable hits. One track sung primarily in the English language builds around a chorus that seems to gather more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. This trick is echoed on another powerful track that expands and constricts, intertwining multiple melodies as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused song charms via its jaunty, Disney-adjacent drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • Lyrically, it aligns the cultural honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Throughout these tracks, the vocals carry a sharp edge, like a fairy-tale character hiding a knife: "Top prize in being a scoundrel / You have won the trophy of disappointment."

An Opulent Feast for the Ears

Lux represents popular music on a grand level, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry amid of impending AI-generated blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of sublime transcendence, creating a dramatic drama that masterfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of buried treasure that requires time to fully explore but never seem like hard work. Where other big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on scraps, Lux offers a lavish banquet at which the guests around it, perhaps intoxicated on sacred drink, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of heartbreaking sadness, and shared stories about hopeless men. It is a contemporary theatrical production from music's most restlessly creative practitioner.
