Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research suggests that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who stop conventional diet and exercise plans.

Research printed in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Doctors suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled one woman.

This difficulty is worsened if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is greater among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
