No fewer than 13 people lose their lives and 98 injured in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The crash happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote economic development in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The president reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's economic agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition demanded an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader maintained that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital projects.
